Inside mount vs. outside mount

Everything starts here. The mount type decides what you measure and where. Pick one before you pick up the tape measure.

Inside mount

The shutter frame sits inside your window opening, flush with the wall. This is the clean, built-in look most homeowners want — and the one our 3-inch flat Z-frame is made for.

  • Needs at least 1-3/4 inches of depth inside the opening
  • Frame finishes flush with the wall — no casing needed
  • Measure the opening itself, not the glass

For shallow openings

Outside mount

When the opening is too shallow or has obstructions, the frame mounts on the wall or trim around the window, covering the opening from the front.

  • For openings shallower than 1-3/4 inches
  • Covers the opening and trims it like a picture frame
  • Measure the area you want the shutter to cover

  • Steel tape measure (a 25-footer is plenty)
  • Pencil and paper — write every measurement down
  • Step stool or ladder for high windows
  • A helper to hold the other end on wide windows (optional)

Measuring, the right way.

Grab your tools

Steel tape measure, pencil, and paper. A step stool for high windows. That's the whole list — no laser, no app, no appointment.

Measure the width — three spots

Inside the opening, measure the width at the top, the middle, and the bottom, to the nearest 1/8 inch. Write all three down. Use the SMALLEST of the three — the shutter has to fit the tightest spot.

Measure the height — three spots

Measure the height on the left side, in the center, and on the right side, to the nearest 1/8 inch. Write all three down. Use the SMALLEST of the three.

Measure the depth

Measure from the front of the opening back to the glass. For an inside mount with our 3-inch flat Z-frame, you need at least 1-3/4 inches of depth. If you're short, switch to an outside mount.

Check for obstructions

Window cranks, handles, locks, alarms, and decorative trim can interfere with the frame or louvers. Note anything that sticks out into the opening.

Match to an RS size

Find the RS standard size on our size chart whose width and height ranges include your measurements. Example: an opening 17 inches wide and 35 inches tall falls into RS-15X3 (width 15–19 in, height 33–37 in, 5 sq ft).

  • Rounding up instead of measuring to the nearest 1/8 inch
  • Measuring the glass instead of the inside of the opening
  • Taking one measurement per window instead of three
  • Forgetting to check depth before ordering an inside mount
  • Ignoring window cranks, handles, or trim that block the frame
  • Assuming the opening is square — older homes almost never are
  • Mixing up inside-mount and outside-mount measurements
